I've got what I'm certain are Molly-Guppy crossbreeds in one of my tanks currenty. 4 fry which look like very plain female guppys and don't really exhibit any molly traits. Their mother is a large, plain, female guppy (or possibly a golly herself as she is the largest guppy I've ever seen, but definately not a molly) who was raised in a tank full of dalmation mollies from the time she was a days old fry with no possible contact from another guppy until I bought some more today. The muppy fry are about 4-5 weeks old. I was surprised after what I've read about Golly/Muppy occurances and them being mostly from male guppy/female molly matchups, and most being infertile males, that I ended up with 4 female muppys. As far as people being interested in them, well, some of the pictures I've seen were rather interesting looking fish, but I doubt anyone would be interested in my muppys except from a scientific standpoit, because they are the plainest looking fish I've ever seen. Whether or not they will survive to adulthood or be fertile or sterile I don't know. I'll keep everyone posted.
Unless guppys can literally be born pregnant, or become impregnated when only a couple of days old, these fish could not have been fathered by anything other than a dalmation molly.
I did read today about amazon mollys and how they become pregnant after recieving sperm from other molly variations, yet genetic testing proves that the offspring get no genetic input from the 'father' fish whatsoever, only the mother. So I suppose that it is possible that guppys, being from the same genus, in addition to possibly crossbreeding with mollys, could have a pregnancy initiated by the sperm from another fish, without any genetic input from the male. Though I have never read anything about such a thing happening to guppys - it would be a totally new scientific find. I kind doubt it, but that would explain why this guppy is bigger than usual and why the offspring almost look like a clone of their mother with no molly traits at all (so far at least).
Does anyone know if guppys could be born pregnant? I believe I have heard of that happening to other species of animal, not fish necessarily, but have never heard of it happening to a guppy. That's really the only other explanation.
