I have a leaky 77 gallon that I don't see me fixing any time soon. So today I got the idea to fill it up just under the leak (about half way) and divide into six or eight sections for male bettas. I would like the material to be cheap if possible. ;)

Silicone the flat side of report cover spines to the glass. Like these:

In the grooves, you can slip plastic canvas mesh (craft stores needlework section, Wal-Mart craft section). It comes in different colours. There are 2 sizes of sheets, I'm not sure if Wal-Mart would have the larger ones, which is what you might need for a 77 gallon.

Some people use plexiglass and drill a lot of small holes. Here’s a setup with plexiglass:

Make your dividers right to the top, no gaps – a betta will jump over the divider if it possibly can.

Plastic egg crate has worked the best for me when seperating fish.

The have two sizes of squares. You would need the smaller squared one for bettas. I use the bigger one for my cichlids.

I cut it to size and have even cut holes in the middle during breeding for the female to escape to a safe zone.

The hole is big enough for her to get away but too small for the male to get over. The female then comes out when she is ready.

I have also used this method when introducing new fish to a tank with a more aggressive tankmate

Here is an example when I introduced my uro. You can see the hole just behind her.

This idea works very well, I used it myself with good sucess. The only issue I had was the silicone didn't hold the pieces to the glass as securely as I'd like, so some of them fell off. If I ever try this again in the future, I plan to find some type of aquarium safe glue that would hold them in place more securely.
