what plant substrate do you use?

3M colorquartz. No root tabs, no substrate fertilization just EI column dosing.

well right now i have fluorite black (it was easier to clean then normal fluorite surprisingly). i have used flourite black sand and liked it alot. also used eco-complete but felt there where way to many difrent grain sizes. last i've used regular flourite and really didn't like the color. last i've used ADA amozonia on smaller and and i really liked it but it is a bit pricy (not that bad really but still). these where all used tanks 30 gallons and below if i do anything biger than 50 i'll probably use some type of sand like colorquartz just because of pricing might mix in some fluorite black sand though.

in general thou as long as you fertilize consistently and use root tabs you dont need any special substrates.

Play sand, and Tahitian moon sand

I have eco in a 75g & like it a lot. I have flourite sand in my 10g shrimp tank, like the color & plants but it's a bit hard to vac. I have pool filter sand in several tanks & maybe like it best. I use root tabs with it & my loaches like it. I have small gravel in 1 & wish I didn't. I like the color & it's the oldest but poo gets too far into it to make it wonderful. And I worry about the sharpness, it's from the UGF days

My discus tank is bare bottom, man do those fish poo.

Nice tank 247plants!

hear i'm using shultz soil conditioner , which is similar to turface or soil master select. there are other tanks i have that have gravel, couple of them look great too, so far have not tried any of the eco complete, flourite, or ada stuff, i might soon as most of them come in black and was figureing they would be better suited to root feeding plants like swords.

I used the eco complete a lot and enjoyed it, but then started to take a liking to flourite black and flourite black sand. I like to use them together as well, they look great together.

I've noticed more with the sand, but with both, that it has a noticeable amount of magnetic grains... I get them caught in my mag cleaners all the time. It's not much of a hassle but I see it as a pro and con. Yeah, it gets stuck in the magnet, might scratch the glass, but on the other hand it is adding iron. The plants seem to like it.

I'm a little worried though, I just started a tank up that's not planted, and used the flourite black sand because I had it around... hoping it doesn't mess with the tank.
