I currently have had a very overstocked 10gal. It had a common pleco, 1 male fancy guppy, 2 chin. algae eaters, ghost catfish minor, snail, and a striped raphel ( i know it was a very overstocked tank, but i was a beginner too) Everything was still living until I got home from the beach 3 days later. I came home to find a dead pleco (the one i thought to last the longest). I have been wanting to find someone to take the remaining fish but could not find anyone, and now i am in a tight situation. What should I do? I have manage too give the male guppy to my girlfriend. I also have a 29gal (details below) but am wanting to add more fish to it later. I was wondering in order to save some of the fishes could I put the stripped raphel in the 29gal and still be able to add more fish later or will it cause it to be overstocked?

To sum it up can I put the striped raphel in my 29gal with the other fish listed below and still be able to add more fish later or will it be overstocked? I am also wonder will it be at a high risk of disease to the other fish if I add him since he came from a tank with a dead fish up to 3 days?

Please help ASAP in order to save the fishes?:help::help::help::help:

First thing is I would do a mwc, I would do some type of medication additive, I am not sure which one is the one to use. But in the 10g tank you are already w/o two fish in there so I would just deal with the wc and the medication. You do not know why he died? How long have you had this tank running? Good luck and relax!!

dont add meds just to add meds. if your fish are dieing because of out-of-whack water parameters, then there is no reason to add meds. if they are being killed off be ich or velvet though, then add meds. adding them to the water now for no reason will only add stress to the current situation.

your best bet would be to take the glass cat and raphael to your LFS. i know for a fact that Petco's will take any fish you bring to them, but your LFS may give you some credit.

:iagree:

See if your lfs will take the unwanted fish and like mentioned above they may give you instore credit

another bad result...i started to look in my 29gal and noticed that i am missing the pepper cory...couple mins later found him to be dead :(. I dont know what is the cause of this...everything was fine when I left 3 days ago, including water perm. As soon as I found him dead i did a water test the results were as followed...

Ammonia-0ppm
Nitrite- 0ppm
Nitrate-20-40ppm

(Note before I left I did about 15-20% WC and rised out my filter media in the old aquarium water for the first time, and of course added Prime. I also didnt feed them for the three days I was gone think that would be ok, was that the prob? One last thing a couple of days before I left I noticed like bubble patches on top of the water not much but some and I asked my friend and he said it was prob. do to high protein (or something like that) he said either to cut back on my feeding or buy a surface skimmer... and when I come back it was gone.)

Any ideas? Anything I need to do? Are the other fish ok? How come everything is fine when I left and when I get back 2 fish are dead?

can anyone help me?

please?

You could probably put the rafael in the 29, but I wouldn't add anything else to it after that.

Your nitrates are a bit elevated in the 29, but not enough to be problematic. Not feeding the fish for 3 days won't kill them.

I wonder if your electricity went out for an extended period of time while you were gone? is your heater plugged in? just trying to make a few guesses for you. I have noticed bubbley water surface on my 29 fw, often I notice it does happen after feeding... doesnt seem to hurt anything however and comes and goes. I personally would do a 50% water change and retest the water after 60 minutes. I like to change my water 50% when the nitrates reach 10ppm, this brings them back down to 5ppm.

Even if you add the Raphael to the 29g, you have room for more fish. You are understocked as it is. I would not add anything terribly small though, because the Raphael may eat small fish at night. And don't add anything too soon, until you get the tanks straightened out.

You should add more cories whenever this gets straightened out, of the same species.

The nitrates may be elevated because of the dead cory (produced ammonia, bacteria converted that to nitrates, which increases them....). 20-40ppm is a wide range. Are you using test strips? If so, I'd suggest eventually getting a liquid test kit, as they are more accurate.

I also suggest giving the remaining fish to the LFS (CAE and Glass cat), as neither of those should be kept in a 10g.

Since the nitrates are increased a bit and you have a protein film, I think you were overfeeding before. Perhaps that lead to the death of the pleco in the 10g? I'm not sure. I don't know what your water parameters were before.

Did you check the temp? Was it normal?

Sounds kind of like a freak thing here with the Cory and the Pleco. I agree, the 10g was overstocked and perhaps the parameters were out of whack, so that lead to his death. I'd just keep an eye on the parameters for a few days and do water changes as needed. You might consider doing atleast 40% water changes weekly, if you normally have increased nitrates.

Once you rehome the inappropriate fish in the 10g, you can work on restocking with fish that can stay long term. ;) The LFS may let you swap out fish if they are pretty nice, so you can get new fish on the same day you take yours in. Just be sure to ask on here for suggestions first, so you don't make the same mistakes again.

Good luck!
