I have two sunset platys. Both are aged, as they have stopped breeding. I don't know how old they were when I got them... they were fully grown... that was a year ago. The male has a ragged tail. The female has a crooked spine and looks rather gaunt. She just lies on the bottom of the tank on her side, breathing rapidly. I have repeatedly tried to capture her, but she is too quick, even in her weakened state. Both still eat and move around quite a bit. I don't want to medicate if it is just old age.
They are comfortable... in a very heavily planted tank with a bogwood cave and rock cave, thick stem plants to hide in. Should I disturb them, medicate, put them to sleep, or just let them live out their days in peace?
