Ok i have a moderately planted 29 gallon tank with 8 danios, a dwarf gourami, and 3 cherry red shrimp. The tank is a few months old. I'd like some sort of bottom dweller. Should/could i get a pleco? or ottos? or Cory cats? any suggestions and/or advice is greatly appreciated.

a pet rock?

joking, I just figured I would bump this for you since you didn't have an answer yet.

:)

given the size of what you've already got, I'd go for otos. But, IIRC, you need to buy in groups - 3 is minimum, I think. Corys would work, too, and you might be able to get away with fewer of them. As for plecos, I love 'em, but they grow too dang fast.

You could have any 1 species of those fish: 6 corys or a small plec, clown, BN etc or a group of otos. Or stay with asian fish & get 6 kuhli loaches.

You have plenty of room. Get 6 cories and either 4 otos or 1 bristlenose/clown pleco.

Kuhli loaches are great fish, except for the fact you never see them if the tank is furnished properly for them. Pretty much the same with clown pleco's. They are skittish little critters, and don't like to stray far from their driftwood (usually the opposite side from you.)
Cory cats are entertaining little social fish, get a group and enjoy watching them. BN pleco's are great for keeping the glass clear of algae.

Oh, flourite looks pretty rough but I haven't used it. Sand or small rounded gravel is safer for barbels. Do you surface vacuum? It's also a matter of loaches & corys having to dig through waste trapped in the (possibly abrasive) substrate.

If you decide to go with corys or loaches keep a close watch for barbel wear, red streaks or white patches on their noses. These are more often from waste build up, bacteria & nitrate level than abrasion.

A small plec might be safer though less visible, they spend more time on wood, rocks & glass than the substrate.
