Some bettas like company and some do not. There is no way to tell ahead of time. It is basically trial and error. When you add tank mates, keep a close eye on everything and be prepared to move fish if necessary. Possible tank mates can include a school of tetras or rasboras as long as they do not have long and flowing fins. The betta will see that as a challenge to the death and someone will not make it. Bettas also like lots of plants in their tank. The more you have the happier he will be. They also like floating plants as well. In fact they love them. As far as the lighting is concerned they like lighting more on the subdued side. I would change out the blue light that was used for your saltwater set up. That hue of light does nothing for freshwater fish.
