What size heater do I need for a 40 long?

I have a 40 gallon tank measuring 39.5" long, Front to back it is 15.5" and the same top to bottom. What size heater do I need? I am going to have NewWorld Cichlids in my tank. Also any recomendations on what kind to buy.

I would put a 100 watt at each end. What new world cichlids were you planning on? That tank will be on the small side for alot of them. A few good species for you would be convicts or firemouths, there are some other smaller ones too.

either a 200 watt in front of a power head, or two 100 watter at each end
