So I got a 30 gallon tank off craigslist and I need a new heater for it.

So what size heater should I get for my 30 gallon?

a 150 is what I would use...

I forgot about this thread.

Thank you for your help. I got a 150 watt stealth(not pro).

Yep, but an 100 watt will just about cut it too. Depends on how different the ambient temp is from your desired temp, I suppose.
Maybe. IF the room temp won't vary greatly from the tank temp. I keep my house at 65-67 and if I need to maintain a temp of 78-80 a 100w heater will just not cut it. I'd spend the extra dollar or two and go to a 200w heater. There's more than just the 5w/gallon equation that should be taken into consideration...

(this is all my opinion)

I think another thing to consider is how closed the tank is, if a lot of heat is escaping you're definitely not going to be able to use an 100w.

I keep my 30 gallon tanks heated with 100w heaters because I live in Florida, and the house rarely gets colder than 67 (and if it does it's at night, not all day long). I keep my tanks at 75, except for the betta, so it doesn't have to work too hard.

I also worry that they'll get stuck and boil the fish, and in that case the lower wattage the better...hopefully I'll notice before any serious damage is done!

Oh, and it's cheaper of course...but really the price difference is not great.
