I want to set up an alternative aquarium..to use for a Q tank for marine fish.

what size do you all use?

it will have live rock . and small skimmer with sand bed.

I would go bare bottom no rock and no skimmer. 10-20 gallon would work for most fish. The point of a QT tank is so you can watch fish before putting them in athe display and medicate them if needed, you generally use the qt since it is much easier to treat most disease with meds that are not reef safe, they would kill the rock and the sand, and possibly leach into the plastic of the skimmer, if you want places for the fish to hide large pvc pipes work wounders.

thanks

Here is my QT tank setup:

1. 10 gallon tank from Petsmart
2. Small power filter (little 10-20 gallon aqua clear)
3. Stick on thermometer
4. Cheapie hood with small light (came with tank)
5. Small heater (50W)

I got some of those cheapie aquarium decorations for my main tank (fake coral, etc) that I thought would look good. I have a couple in my tank for fish to hide behind, in, under, etc.

cool..I wanted to set up a q tank for any new fish etc I was planning on adding..I don't want to introduce any parasites etc.

I will set up a hospital tank for any sick fish unless treatement needs to be completed to the existing system.

I'm fairly lucky that one of the lFS's here q's their fish for a couple weeks before adding them to their stock to sell. but still ..better safe than sorry.

I was just wondering if it is wise to set up a tank for this that is up and running set to the same parameters as my maintank.
introducong the new fish to similar environmentals as the main to help reduce stress when the new animal is ready to add to the main tank. also helping to reduce stress by adding them to a set up tank.

well what fish do you have, obviously the bigger the fish the bigger the quarantine tank.

You definately need it to be at the same parameters as your current tank. Not only to help new fish become adapted but should you need it as a "hospital" you don't want to give your current fish a shock. I only have a small tank as a Qt which was big enough to temporarily house my Yellow Tang when she was poorly (plus she only lay on the bottom of it) but if you want to be be really prepared for worst scenario what if ALL your fish need treating at the same time and you can't put a certain treatment in your main tank. Just a thought.

I know what some of the guys will say on here - get yourself a bigger tank and use current one as a QT!!!:dance2:

LOL..my current tank is a 110X(tall)..I doubt my wife will think that should be a quarantine tank.
