What Size Tank Do Fish Prefer?

Ok, it's down to the wire now. I get a new tank this weekend. What I cannot decide is what size tank to purchase. I thought I would want a 55g and not a 50g because the first is five gallons more and naturally, more is better, right? Looking at the dimensions, it looks like the 50g is wider than the 55g. Somehow I have decided fish would prefer more depth, since in my 10g they seem to be cramped and that tank is just 2 inches less than the 55g. (The 10g holds 7 small danio/tetras). But wait, maybe a 65g or 75g would be better? I CANNOT MAKE UP MY MIND! :thud: Please help me.

If you have a 50-75g tank, please let me know if you like it or not and why. I do not know the depth demensions of the 65 or 75g tanks. All I really know is that I do not want a tall tank. Does depth really matter or is it just my imagination? I am planning on a community tank with small to medium, shy to peaceful fish and lots of plants and hiding places.
 
i prefer tanks that are larger by height. as in, smaller width. they look much nicer to me.

as far a what to buy, it's all personal choice. financially do what's best. also choose which fish you'd want to add to the new tank that will help with the size. big tanks are great fun but remember that they take more work too.

depends on the size (height) of the fish and what layer they tend to live in (bottom vs mid vs top).
 
Go the 75g , bigger is better, easier maintenance and water stability,ph ect,ect
 
I dont know the dimensions of those tanks either. There are websites that list standard dimensions, you might try a google search...
A shorter wider ( or longer) tank will provide relatively more surface area for gas exchange, and more bottom area for bottom dwelling fish and plants. for these reasons I find them preferable.
 
Get the 75G, you will have the option of adding more fish if you decide. If you get a 55G your options are limited when compared with 75G.
 
If I knew more when I bought my 55 gallon I wouldn't. They are so narrow. 13" wide is not much, especially if you want to scape it. You just can't plant much in the way of depth. I would actually go with a 50 gallon instead of a 55. The standard 65 and 75 are nice, But I would go with the 65 IMHO. Just for the wider tank.
