What "sparked" you into keeping fish yourself?

I had a gold fish and a pleco when I was little. They lived for 5 years in a 20 gallon tank. When I got older I didnt care about fish but my little brother had the same 20 gallon that I had when I was younger with 2 twin tail goldfish. When I moved in with my G/F 2 years ago she wanted fish and I said no because I didnt want to take care of them. after a year of "constant suggesting" I gave in. A buddy of mine gave her a compleat 25 gallon setup. I thought since we are having fish I want fish that would eat other fish. I told her this and she said "Not in my tank! I want nice fishies." So then when I couldnt get the fish I wanted something in my head just snapped and said I have to have these fish! after 6 months of constant suggesting I got my first tank. it was a 20 long that was given to me by my G/F's best friends brother. I went to the LFS after it was cycled and got 4 baby convicts. 3 weeks later my tank cracked diagonally so I moved them to a 10 gallon. 4 months later The same buddy who gave my G/F a tank grandmother died and he told me I could have her 2 tanks. When I went to pick them up I found out that one was a 55 gallon and the other was a 30 tall. I took both tanks home fish and all. with in a matter of hours I had them up and running. Now here I am today obsessed with fish and wanting a house so I can bulid my MEGA tank 10'x5'x4' Yes thats a 1,500 gallon tank. The great thing is my G/F is down with the idea.

I asked Santa for a goldfish!! It was so exciting (lol yes.,.) But anyways. I got this crappy like 5 gallon plastic tank for it and a certificate for a LPS, i kept it for 7-8 years until it died.,.

When I was growing up, my father had a fish room with rows and rows of tanks for the guppies and mollies he was breeding. That is where it started. However, I did not have a tank in my own home until my daughter was in the third grade and came home with a rosy barb. Of course we had to buy a whole setup for this one fish. Before long I had several more tanks going in various sizes and they are still going strong now some twelve years later. Once it is in your blood there is no end to it. It is best not to fight it. Just go with the flow and enjoy the ride.

Marinemom

My parents had a 10" RBP in a 26g metal framed tank that got a semi-annual 50% PWC whether it was needed or not, so I grew up around an example of how not to do it, but thought "Gus" was interesting.

What hooked me was a neighbor's marine tank - FO w/ UGF - coral sand on dolomite. It was a 29g acrylic w/ a coris wrasse (seldom seen), percula and/or tomato clowns, damsels etc. over the years. That actually lead me to my 1st job, scraping algae, removing carcasses & eventually doing other maint. chores in the same LFS the neighbor worked for. I worked for store credit, bought a 20g show tank, UGF materials, Silent Giant, dolomite, coral sand & IO. I kept the marine FO tank for ~2 years before tearing it down and getting a JD.

This was soooo long ago, that, at the time, I was doing it all right.

My dad was the one who started it all. Years later it was me who is the fish keeper.

when i was very young i remember my parents having a FW tropical tank, gouramis, neons, etc. then nothing for ages... then when i was about 10, my aunt (who breeds guppies since always) gave me 2 male guppies. i learnt quickly how to look after them, and by the time i was 12, i was successfully breeding them on my own. my parents bought me a bigger tank to fit them all, and it went from there... when i moved out of home, i took my tank, and then i got another one, and another one... when i met my husband, he got to love them just as much as i do, and bought me my first SW setup -- yay!!
so now we have lots of happy fishies together, and the fun never ends!! :p

I was on my laptop one morning and my aquarium screen saver came up. My 3 year old daughter loved it and that day I decided to get a little bookshelf 5 gallon tank.

My wife and I went to the pet store and came home with a 20H. My daughter really liked it, but I liked it more.

Now I have a 55, 29, 20H (empty), and a 10. She still like to look at them from time to time and I never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I do. It turned out to be a very rewarding hobby.

Lol, that's exactly how we discovered that my son liked watching fish! He would watch it for hours and at one point it was the only thing that would calm him down.

I originally got the fish for my son,but as usual i ended up looking after them so they are my fish now.I have always liked to watch fish ,they are so calming.

Thats amazing lol^ stereokills

I was about 7-8? I had a 10g from I dunno where? I would go to a creek and catch ALOT of crayfish and keep em in there during summer behind the shed. My dad had a 55g with oscars as a kid and got a 55g when I was a kid. I dont remember the FW fish but when he later converted it to a SW I remebmer all the fish and going to the petstores with him. It was just me and my dad. So the LFS was a neat exscursion. He a few years later sold the tank I belive when I was about 13-14? My house was "dry" for a few years and I went shiz zu and rotweiler and iguana guine? pigs hamsters ect. I got a big suprise one day my neighber gave me his 55g HEX complete setup. I was stoked. I had neons, dwarf gouramis ect. I also got another 10g and had turtles from the lakes and always returned ect. I had fire belly newts and tadpoles all sortsa stuff. I moved out and my parents ran it (just the 55g) from 18yr-22yrs old. I got my own apt with my fiance about 1 yr ago and set the 55g up. the 10g was hermit crabs for awhile then FISH lol. I got her into the hobby with another 10g setup and letting her decorate. Thankgod no pink castles and clown puke gravel. I was given a 5g setup from my mom from her doctors office and decided to do cherry shrimp.

Now its the stock below. Take a look at my tanks and give me some advice. Thanks Justin.
