So today I bought a 30 gallon tank and I am trying to decide on a good substrate.

The tank is going to be planted.

I also plan to keep some kind of bottom feeder/fish that will suck on the glass so any substrate that is too sharp and/or could harm a bottom feeder is out of the question.

I have Eco-complete in my ten gallon and I hate it so that is also out of the question.

So what would be the best substrate for a planted tank with these requirements?

I hope to go to my lfs tomorrow to pick up the substrate and other things so I would appreciate a speedy response:).

Eco-complete (or at least the batch I bought) is very dirt like so every time I move something sitting in it a cloud of dirt billows up, which I do not like.

many of the planted susbtrates are dusty. it takes a fair amount of time for them to settle. eco tends to be not as bad then like flourite which you have to wash a lot. the ones i said also needs to be cleaned very well. they have a higher CEC then most of the other clay based substrates out there.

I have flourite in my planted 80. I, and my plants, like it. I really scrubbed it before putting it in. No dust now

Do you have any bottom feeders in your 80 gallon tank with flourite? If so are there any problems with them and the flourite?

Is it the flourite sand or the regular gravel-like flourite.

Flourite it is!

As for the dust I will just wash it really well.

When I said the Eco-complete was dirt-like I meant that the substrate itself was the consistency of a very fine mud.

Thank you for all your help:)!
