What the heck are these shrimp?

See what it looks like when the new shell hardens.

Glad somebody knew what they were talking about.

They're Macrobrachium (there are hundreds of species in the genus and some of them do look like North American ghost shrimp, as you'd expect since Palaemonetes belongs to the same family), and resembles what's often called M. lanchesteri -- though I haven't checked whether that assignment is actually correct. Most likely Southeast Asian at any rate.

I haven't ever heard of shrimp being dyed (not that it would really surprise me if it is taking place), but I agree that the red doesn't really look like endogenous pigment. (Are those pink eggs I'm seeing under the female?) This may be some sort of bacterial infection of the muscles or carapace (no cause for immediate panic -- I've seen similar things in other shrimp that were essentially benign) or even a side effect of diet. See whether it's still present after molting.

Redfronted shrimp, Caridina gracilirostris. Usually those lines are a slightly more reddish hue, although I've seen ones with orange hues too in pictures......hmmm but they look very much like the Redfronted shrimp to me, rare find. They usually run like 25 bucks for 4 or 5. I have never seen them at any LFS, and only 2 or 3 times in the last 5 years I've been checking out aquabid.com. Maybe they are more pinkish under your lighting?
