hey guys im planning on making a diy refuguim with a 2.5 gallon. i am planning on using one of those minijet power heads to feed water to it, and to return the water back into my reef set up. At the other website, they told me to get an overflow box, but they never explained to me what the purpose of it was. please tell me.

An overflow box is simply a syphon box which removes water from the display tank and directs it down into a sump..An overflow box is not something to be using with a small refugium as you have in mind. Overlfow boxes "average" about 600gph which is way too fast for a refugium...

Here is an image of an overflow box..

For a little refugium like your suggesting, all you need is a syphon tube to take water out of the tank and into the refugium and then use a powerhead to return the water from the refugium back to the tank...
