What to cover tank with?

Hey Everyone -

I am going to convert my current (standard) flourescent strip light and black flip up hood to a custom PC lighting fixture mounted in a raised wooden hood and I am wondering what I should use to cover my tank. I want something completely clear (like glass) to let all of the light through, but i obviously still need the slots in the back for my filter, heater, etc....

And it would be nice to still have easy access to the water for feeding purposes....

Any suggestions?

Glass. Glass covers are available for most standard tanks, and include a plastic strip that can be cut to provide access for pipes and cords, and they are split in the middle with a handle to allow easy access.

Another option--you can have the glass custom made for you. Most glass shops would easily be able to cut a top with holes for cord and pipe access, with a section cut out for access.

Of course, the tank doesn't have to be covered. The canopy can be built to sit on top of the lid, and hold the lights away from the water surface. Openings can be closed off with nylon. Take a wire hanger, bend it to the right shape, slide into a nylon, and then tack into place. The benefit of this is to allow air flow, which prevents over heating from the lights, while preventing jumpers from ending up dried on the floor.

Do you know of any quality online stores that sell these glass covers that fit standard size tanks? (Easier than searching local stores)
 
I ordered all my dry good (pumpes extra) from live aquaria (dr foster and smith). I like every thing i got (exped i dont like the rio power head there P.O.S., but they dont make them rio does). Though if i was u id buy the glass top at a LFS cuase of shiping and u get to see what your buying a little better.
