I have a 55 gallon tank that for a while was s american cat tank and now is a tire track/peacock eel tank with one snake skin quarami. The tank currently has a sand substrate with driftwood serving as decor and hiding places. I'm thinkng of changing over to a fine gravle and maybe even planting it. I want to keep the lgihts low so i can hope to see my fish sometime so i am planning on using low light plants (care to recommend some?) and another idea i had was to have the lighting brighter on one half than on the other and put the majority of the plants on that half and the other half more wood and rocks with some smaller plants staggered amongst it,has anyone ever tryed this? any reasons it wouldnt work?

I dont have the money or the time to get the high end co2 and mega watt lights,it has two fifteen strips on it now and i will be adding two more as soon as i build a canopy for them. I plan to use the diy co2 system maybe two of them. Will this work for low light plants?? Will it be enough even for the lowest light plants? It will be roughly 1.2 watts per gallon.

I had a planted tank once before but didnt really pay attention to how i did it and its sence vacated my brain so i need help with the substrate, obviously no sand and no ugf but thats where my knoweledge stops. The tank has a whipser 220 canister and a regent h.o.t (20-40). Will this be adequate? It has done well with no plants and i would think with plants it wold do even better. I've heard about undergravle heating, sounds expensive and even if its not i dont have the money to get it:rolleyes: so will a regular ole' tank heater do the job properly? How many pounds roughly of gravle will i need?? None of my local pet stores have flourite or anything, the closest they come is like drop in fertalizers, will the plants grow adequately without flourite?

Thanks guys. Sorry for so many "stupid" questions.

There are lots and lots of plants you need to do very little for to have them thrive. however looking into a fertilizer of some kind would be a good idea. I use a liquid fertalizer called Flourish Iron with my plants other than that i leave it up to my fish to fertilize ;)

anyway, here is a list of plants to get you started -

java moss
Java Fern
anubis

thats all i can think of right now hehe (can never remeber the names) anyway if you have a reputable fish store near you go there and as them for some plant suggestions. (dont, i repeat DONT go to petsmart for plants. nearly everything they stock are actually plants that are not supposed to be totally submerged. I lost all my original plants cause i bought from them)

anyway, hopefully a helpful mod will be able to move this to the plants forum where people will probalby be able to help you better!
