I was just given a 60 gallon hex tank and was looking for suggestions as to what to put in it. I know it doesn't have a great deal of surface area so I am aware there will be limitations. I would like a lot of movement and color at all levels of the column if possible. Any ideas would be appreciated.
I would avoid cory catfish as they love to go to the surface occasionally. Instead think about some of the smaller loaches like yoyo's, zebras or khulies. They are interesting fish to look at.
There are many colourful and active schooling fish that would probably do well, tetras, barbs, danios. When placed into a larger school they tend to be much more active.
Perhaps a Paradise fish (not a black one) would be a great centerpiece fish.
With less surface area I would probably stick to smaller fish in larger schools, but that is my idea of a nice tank.
Would the paradise fish and the tiger barbs get along? My friend had tiger barbs who nipped at everything and ended up in a case of ich that spread through the whole tank. I know Paradise Fish have long fins, and aren't the best at sharing and caring...
Some people swear that tiger barbs nip less if kept in larger groups. That way their aggression is spread among their own species moreso than among the other tankmates...
I don't know for sure, I stay away from the buggers.
Yeah Aquarius I have been told the same thing, dont know if its true as I never decided to risk it!
I know paradise fish are hard to find suitable tank mates for though as they can be quite nasty and at the same time get there fins nipped.
As you have a small surface area a good rule of thumb is not to go for faster moving fish as they like lots of room to swim.
How about dwarf gouramis? and plattys with some cories at the bottom?
IMO, the paradise fish will be fine... Females have short fins and males fins really are't long and flowy... not to mention that paradise fish have attitude to boot.
IMO, it is true with the tiger barbs, they prefer to focus their nipping on each other rather than on other tank mates, so if there's enough of them, nipping should be kept low.
