So we have this 40 gallon hex tall tank here with brackish water for our green puffer & 6 scats. We are getting rid of these fish simply because they will get too big for this tank. We have a 75 gallon, but are making that one a saltwater tank. So virtually, unless we get another tank that we don't have room for, we have to get rid of them :(

Now, to decide what we are going to do with this aquarium

It will be FW for sure, but the question is what type of fish. We were thinking african cichlids, but were told that a hex tank isn't right for them, so that's out. Are there certain fish we shouldn't have in a tall hex tank?

Thanks in advance!

hmm

have you already started turning the 75 into saltwater? Personally, if you already have the fish put them in the 75 and turn the 40 into SW rather then getting rid of fish you already have and getting more.

a hex shape will restrict the amount of swimming space a fish can have as well as surface area, so fish that may live comfortably in a regular rectangle 40G may not be suitable for a 40G hex.

i would also convert the 40G hex into a saltwater if you havn't done so with the 75G. it'll be a lot cheaper.

We have not made the 75 saltwater yet, but I thought the bigger the easier for saltwater aquariums? I didn't realize that a tall tank would be ok for saltwater. We're getting a false clownfish for one, and a few other smaller compatible peaceful fish, so would this still be ok for them?

I was informed not too long ago that our 75 gallon will indeed be a saltwater. No ifs, ands, or buts! LOL....Which is fine though. I really do want to make this 40 gallon hex an active community freshwater tank. So anyone have any other suggestions for some brighter color fish that would be good in this tank? We already have a 29 gallon with tiger barbs, various platies and a fancy guppy, so we'll want to do something a little different. :)

How about a nice school of tetras such as neons or cardinals and maybe a mystery snail for algae control or an otto cat or two for the same thing.Other tetras that come to mind are the rummynose, the lemon tetra, and glo-lites as well as black neons. There are also rasboras like the harlequin rasboras that look like they are wearing little tuxedos and are tight schoolers. Brilliant rasborsas look almost irridesent when the light shines on them. Just a few thoughts.

I'm a big fan of dwarf cichlids, either rams or apistos. A pair (and only a pair) don't require alot of swimming space. Get a school like tetras or rasboras for your mid level and complete it with some fancy guppies or hatchet fishes for the top level.

If you're looking for a larger centerpiece fish, a gourami or a single angelfish are good choices.

Thanks for the suggestions! Sounds like I have some fish to choose from ;) We used to have a dwarf gourami and I LOVED him...he was the only one we actually named - Willy. He did pass, but he was such as awesome fish with such a personality! I'm not crazy about the big ones, but I like the idea of the dwarf with some fancy guppies and/or tetras :)

The tank is right by my desk, so I want something fun to watch ;)
