I have 2 Angel Fish that I've had about a week now. They seem to be active and doing fine. I'm concerned that they don't seem to eat a lot and the other fish go after the food more than they do. I'm especially concerned because I lost my first 2 Angel fish -- though they were about 1/2 the size of these.

(One other side question - The marble angel fish seemed to be looking at his reflection in the side of the tank quite a bit when I first got him -- like he thought it was another fish. Should I get more than one marble? The other one is white/pearl - not sure what you call them. How many should I have?)

I've lost one cardinal tetra and several neons in the past couple weeks also and wonder if maybe they aren't eating enough because they do hang out in the back/bottom of the tank while the other fish are more aggressive about eating.

Also, I have the dwarf frog whose quite small and I'm feeding them all Tetra Min Pro. Is there some special food I can feed these fish?

Thanks!

Hi There,

My angels have been in my tank now for about 3 weeks and for the first week they ate very little. I feed them Tetra colour flakes and they eat those now - in fact they are keener than my danio's at feeding time!!!

I also feed them twice a week on frozen blood worm and they actually eat out of my hand now. I don't think (as far as i've been told) that colour matters more the fact they like to be kept in groups. Apparently (again form what i have been told) if you have more than 2 and one is agressive the others take some of the attention away.

I am a big time newbie so most of my info is form these forums.

hope that helps

I would suspect your neons and card might have been victims of the angels, depending upon their size. In the wild, neons are one of Angels favorite foods. (this is of course if you haven't found corpses or if the corpses were ratty and damaged). This might actually explain the strange feeding behaviour of the angels and the shyness of the others.

I haven't kept frogs in years, but if memory serves me, they are happy to eat most anything.

I would have to agree with this, The angels will eat anything that fits into thier mouths. I had about 20 Zebra danios in my 55 with 4 angels. Over a period of months the zebras started to disappear. I had a heavy planted tank and one day I saw my angel dart out of a Sword plant grabbing a Zebra whole and downing in him a few seconds flat. And these guys were fed twice a day. Fish are like cats and need to hunt. Angels will go after the smaller fish as food.
Also, the frogs will also eat anthing they can get thier hands on as well. if they are looking very plumped belly, there could be a reason. ;)

Check out the article about frogs in my signature.

They should be target fed to avoid starvation or deficiency. Frozen bloodworms and/or shell-less pieces of frozen krill seem to work best in my experience.

Also, the frogs may become victim to the angels when they are adults. Some angels can't seem to resist biting the arms and legs of the defenseless frogs.

Regarding your losses, is the tank cycled? Did you cycle it with ammonia? If not, its likely that toxic water conditions are what are killing your fish. That, and as mentioned, neons and cardinals are a food source for angelfish.

Trick, I'm not sure what you're saying about the last part, but a frog wouldn't be able to eat or catch a neon or cardinal.

more info on my tank....

I found 2 tetra bodies in the bottom of the tank Sunday night not long after my boyfriend suctioned out the tank with the gravel filter.

The next morning, my Bala Shark was dead. Mon night, I saw another dead neon in the bottom tank corner and tried to net him out but he went behind some plants in the back of the tank and I couldn't see him anymore. I thought he'd float to the top in 24 hours but he hadn't this morning. I'll look for him more tonight.

I had several neons missing and thought the silver spotted catfish I had that was appx 1-1/2 inches long may have been eating them so I took him back to the pet store and got 3 more neons because I had six originally and only saw 2-3 at that point. I'm not sure if some of them are hiding out because I have a big castle, several fake plants and rocks where they could be. I'll see a few of them swimming around.

About my dwarf frog, I did see the white angel fish nip at the frog's foot when he was floating by him the other day! I didn't know that they liked to eat them, I just thought he got too close or they thought he looked like a big piece of food or something! ; )

Thanks for the information. You all are great!! :bowing:

You know, I was thinking of the Clawed frog, the larger cousin of the Dwarf.
yeah, the dwarfs are very tiny indeed but it wouldnt stop them from maybe trying to nip a slow moving tiny tetra.

I successfully keep dwarf frogs with juvenile and adult ghost shrimp, as well as pygmy cories. I've heard some won't even bother with small fry. I guess it is possible, though perhaps not common at all.

No worries, though. I figured you may have meant the Xenopus sp. :)
