What to feed catfish?

Hi Emma,

I can understand how frustrating this must be - since you didn't exactly go out seeking them as pets!

First - that wikipedia article shows all sorts of foods that they like to eat. That might be a great source of creative feeding to get them to eat. If all else fails, maybe fishing worms (red wigglers are sold at bait shops everywhere). That would be a common large catfish delight. I wonder if it is the fact that they want their food to move that is keeping them from eating? Dont know for sure. But I sure do wish you luck!

Oh - is it possible that a local Gander Mountain store might want them donated to their tank? My local store is HUGGGGEE and they're always asking fishermen to donate native species. Well, your guys are native. WHy not try calling them? And if they say no, ask who else might want them - zoo perhaps?

PPS: I used to read a native species forum - I wonder if some of those guys would like to take your fish off your hands? They raised some amazingly large natives in some cases. If I can find the forum - I'll post it for you.

Hi--thanks for the advice. I think I have some shrimp in the freezer so I'll try that.

I would love to unload these fish. I have a family member who said he would take them--but he wants to eat them! Great idea about calling local fishing stores see if any of them will take the fish off my hands. Do you think someone w/ a pond would take these fish?

At the same time I got these there was an atlantic salmon in the bucket but it died within minutes. It was already sick. There were two other fish that died right away as well but I don't know what kind of fish they were--I'd never seen them before. They were like frog fish.

there's not a whole lot that channel cats wont eat.. dead fish are a favorite... and dead fish dipped in garlic oil are even tastier.

DO NOT LET THEM GO TO SOMEONE WHO WILL EAT THEM.

90% of the chemicals used in hobbyist aquariums are NOT for human consumption... not to mention that we dont know what they've been exposed to as part of the study they were in.

good luck!

When I said Gander Mountain - I meant to say Cabellas! (Doh - I can be dumb sometimes)

And I found it!

North American Native Fishes Forum - just tell these guys you were given these fish - it wasn't your idea to keep them - and you want to know how to find a home for them. They're SUPER nice on there!!!

Let us know if you find a home for them.

Bass outdoor shops also keep a huge aquarium with native fish in it. Might be able to turn them over to one of those if you have em in the area.
