What should I put in my Fluval to soften my water? I have guppies and mollies and I was told that if I have hard water, they won't live long. I don't want Peat as it will discolour my water. I don't have time to boil my water before I add it and I can't afford to buy a softening pillow. Also, a softening pillow must be maintained every 36-48 hours, which I don't have time to do. I have activated carbon, 2 pot scrubbers, and polywool in my canister right now. I am only using carbon as a bio media as it has a large surface area.

I wouldn't bother. Mollies actually like hard water which is why so many say they need brackish water. Guppies will be fine too.

My manager at work is very intellegent when it comes to fish and told me that if my water is hard, my fish won't live very long. Thanks for the reply. They are fine as of now. She also says that you can't put cory cats, guppies, and mollies in the same tank, but I knw that isn't true. I have 3 albino cory cats, 5 baby guppies, and 4 baby black mollies.

My water is 8.0+ and I have a couple fish that are over 10 yrs old. PH levels only need to be stable.
