What type of betta should I get?

So are you getting the mustard gas?

I think I'm going to wait. I eventually want one, but I'll wait until I'm more knowledgeable about bettas. For now, I'm going to look around. There's a great LFS here in Knoxville that keeps a lot bettas in small setups. They look to be about 1/2 gallon to 2 gallons. I don't want to get another setup right this moment, but the bettas in these setups are usually taken care of more than other places. I've seen some really nice ones. Who knows, maybe they'll have a Mustard Gas when I go?

I think you'll be surprised at how nice they can end up!

Yeah, I had a betta when I was little. When I bought him he was this awful brown. I didn't know about betta care when I was small, so he went into a slightly bigger glass bowl. Even that small amount of extra room made his color come out more. He ended up being a rather vibrant red. I just wish I had known more about his care at the time, because he probably would still be here today. I would have been thrilled as a kid to know all those bubbles at the top of the bowl were a bubble nest...

I'm hoping this weekend I can go to that LFS, because I think they'll let me have some media. They're a very experienced store, and they have hundreds of tanks and lots of equipment. Because they only deal with fish, I think they'll be a little more generous...hopefully. And if not, they probably sell or know where to get the proper ammonia. The sooner this tank is cycled, the sooner I can get my new buddy. ;)

You might want to check out the possibility of getting a Betta imbellis. I paid a lot to have my pair imported, but I've heard that they pop up in some better LFS sometimes for like under 10 bucks. Maybe your LFS can get one for you if you like the look. They're just as easy as fancy bettas, but without the excess finnage. See the pics of my imbellis in this thread.http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213406

Enjoy whatever you get.
