I need help finding out what type of fish I have. Someone gave these fish to me and told me that they are African Cichlids, one male and the other female, thats pretty much it.
I dont know how helpful this will be but here goes.
One is a dark purplish color, kind of plain and boring lol, I was told thats the female.
The other one is slightly smaller and silverish with pretty blue dots and lips outlinned in blue, this is the male. Also he has two small black markings, one on this tail and one on his back.
They are both about 4 inches. Sorry I cant put a picture on here, but I hope someone can give me an idea which type they are by the description I gave?
Thanks

(in reply from your other post) If they have bred and ate their young, that sounds very fishy. I think very few (if any) cichlids will consume their fry although sometimes new parents will do this before they get things figured out. How purple is this purple? I've been racking my brain about any cichlids which might be purple and grey and I'm wondering if maybe a pair of convicts could fit into this category. I've seen some convicts which could be considered purple to some people. Go find some photos of convict cichlids and see if those look firmiliar. Also, look up Mbuna and see if any of those at least have a similar body shape. There are tons of mbuna colors and many change as they get older. KYle

The purple one sounds like maybe a slender mbuna or purple mbuna. Or maybe some other kind of Mbuna cichlid.

The Blue spooted one is probally a jewel if its from africa. But it also matches the description of a Jack Dempsy very well aswell.

When dealing with rift lake cichlids, most often if the fry are left in the tank with the adults they will consume them. Once the babies have been spat the mother may look after them for a little while and bring them back into her mouth for safe keeping, but other fish in the tank will often try to eat them. The mother will soon loose intrest in caring for them and also try to eat them. An occational fry will survive if there are enough small hiding places for them.

I suggest you try searching the profiles at http://www.malawimayhem.com to see if any of those fish look similar.

For purple fish Acei sounds familiar:

If they have bred then they must both be malawi mbuna or hap, or neither.

It would be best if you could post some pictures. ;)

Thanks alot for the replies guys.
SnakeSkinner, the purple one is very dark, almost black. Looks like the one on
LuvMyKribs photo, except for the coloring.
Lately I have noticed that the silverish looking one becomes very dark when he comes out from hiding in a dark place. I thought that was pretty cool, he is very beautiful.
I'm going to have to do alittle more research, just need some more time! :)
Thanks everyone

O yeah, one more thing the purple one is starting to move rocks from one area in the tank. I sat there and watched her do it until I could see the bottom of the tank! Think its time for babies, this is what I was told anyway. :D
