Here's a challenge for all you invert junkies- an ID without a pic! I caught a few crays when fishing today. Two are about 1-3/4" and the third is 1-1/4". Shell is brownish, tips of claws are a vivid red. Caught in a tidepool in the Ohio River below a dam when flow was low, so I assume they're used to a rapid current. Any ideas?

80% sure you've got a P. clarkii or P. alleni. Without good photos it's impossible to tell, even from the best description.

did you post this on monster to??

P. stands for Procambarus.

Pixl8r- what are you basing this on? Procambarus alleni does not occur in Indiana; P. clarkii is there as an invasive, but the description does not match it. It sounds like one of the many Orconectes species to me.

Neither of the colors work. They looked more drab except for the very tips of the claws. Not sure if this is a valid measure of maturity, but one of the larger ones pinched the hell out of me. I went to look at them today, looks like something came and ate them out of my outdoor quarantine...
