Hi- I am stocking a 55 gal. salt tank. What types of rocks should I use and what types should I stay away from .I have fine aragonite substrate, and I plan on using live rock and base rock...Just looking for base rock ideas.

Limestone is a bad choice because its solid. What you want to use is Tufa or Lava Rocks (the big red ones), these are alot better then limestone because it has pores and crevices that increase surface area for bacteria.

If you go for something that it's not solid, then you end up having more water in your tank. :)

I've heard that limestone can negatively effect the water, and takes good bacteria from the water? Is shale like rock (limestone and bluestone) ever the reason for fish loss or cycling problems? I had it in a cycling 55 gal. and had big problems. I need to start over and am worried the rock was the culprit.

I guess I'm just looking for the cheapest option!!!

Limestone is fine, and the more porous the better.

The red lava rocks are rubbish in my opinion unless you want to grow lots of algae. I'v done back to back testing of lava and limestone in the same tank and the lava was covered in red wiry algae, while the limestone wasn't.
