Well, later down the road a little ways I would like to get some freshwater shrimp for my 10g. If possible some for my hex5 as well so I can something to watch other than the betta. Could I put some shrimp in a 5g tank with a male double fin betta? He seems pretty mellow to me but idk.

Also, is this even the right section for shrimp? It says bottom dwelers and I would assume that shrimp pretty much stay at the bottom unless they climb somthing to get higher.

What?, it still says edit post, but when I go to edit it, a thing comes up saying I cant.

Well the edit was going to say
Sorry this is in the wrong section, proves how much I look around in the morning :)
If a moderator sees this could you please move it to the correct section? THANKS!

Moved :)

As to whether or not a betta will work with shrimp, it really depends on the betta. ALL of them will relish the live snack of baby shrimp, some leave adults alone. If the tank is super densely planted, you may have moderate success.

Thank you for moving it :) Guess I should look around a bit more rather than just assuming it is the correct section.

My betta seems pretty calm, but you never know. Guess I could get some shrimp for the 10g then try a couple out with the betta. I do want to make the tank planted nicely but I think I would have to stick to plastic plants for now.

I've had mixed luck with Betta's and shrimp, I have 1 male and 1 female who seem to leave them alone, and another male who will actively hunt down and kill every cherry shrimp he can find, he'll kill ghost shrimp to but really goes after the cherry's aggressively must be the red coloring. I had another male who would occasionally kill them.

My suggestion would be to get a few ghost shrimp to try first, they're pretty cheap 33 cents at petsmart and 7-10 for $1 at some LFS here. You could keep a bunch in a 5 hex as well, just get some plants even if they're fake so they have stuff to climb and hide. I've kept cherries, ghost, and bamboo, Cherry and ghost are both pretty active they'll climb around on things and swim around sometimes especially if foods going in the tank.

I am thinking about putting the shrimp in when my fish from the hex 5 get to move over to the 10g. I plan on putting some cherry shrimp in the 10g with the neon tetras and guppies. Then maybe some ghost shrimp in the hex 5 with the betta when he gets to move to that tank.
