What type of water?????

wait seriously where do you live, and did thay say what was in the tap water that is bad for fish?

personally i would just use tap water. the pet store might just be trying to sell you something you don't need.
If in fact the tap reading of ammonia is 4.0 then that is what is bad for the fish along with the 2.0 nitrIte reading. Really though I wouldn't trust many pet stores they are there to make money after all, legit or non-legit. Do you drink your water?

I don't think I'd want to drink that tap water if the ammonia was that high.

Did you test your tap water yourself? If so, what kind of test did you use?

I'm just wondering where in the world would have tap water with that much ammonia in it.

i used the API liquid test kit

FYI, RO/DI = reverse osmosis /deIonized water
distilled water is distilled not the same

if your water is municipal water you should contact the supplier.
if it's well water..yer on your own.
if you decide to use spring water..often bottled water is tap run thru a large activated carbon filter...

you may want to test the KH/GH.
you'll need to know if you need to add minerals/carbonates.

You are right they are not the same. It is the way they are process that makes them different but the end results are about the same. RO water is run though membranes that take the pollutants out of your water and it pure with no minerals in the water. Distilled is actually boiled to the point that there is nothing left in the water.

Also always look at the fine print at the bottom of the bottle. Even though it says distilled water it will say that "by means of Reverse osmosis". I have one bottle that says drinking water on it and at the bottom is say it processed by means of reverse osmosis and ozonation with added minerals.
