AGA 125 w/ 40 sump. Turned on my GRI 518 pump to get the ~10X turnover suggested... I have two really cool water falls going at the built-in overflows and a really nice turbine sound!

Now that I know that turning 1200 GPH with a GRI 518 Binford is major overkill, what do you suggest for a "realistic" turnover? I was looking at the Blueline that's rated for 875 GPH. I was told they are very quiet. Suggestions?

The GRI 518 is available... or will be a really pricey backup pump.

1200 gph for a 125 gallon tank is not overkill?

I have a 72 gallon tank, and im running a Surge 6000, and a little giant, Not sure themodel.. im getting 28 times the turn over in my tank.

Really it depends on what you are keeping.. I mean if you are only keeping say softies.. then you are fine with 6-10 time.. but you get into more higher needs, you need more flow..

i have SPS in my tank, and they love the 28 times flow.. now given i also have some Green stars.. and they dont seem to be growing well.. as they spend all there energy getting pushed around in the current.

yea pretty much, and its not uncommon with people who are keeping SPS or clams. They love the waterflow.. and they need it.. to keep them clean

last tank i had (72 bow) I was moving around 3000 GPH an hour through my sump.

Three little giant pumps.

Anyways, 1200 gph is a very reasonable number. What are you having problems with? too much noise?

Do you just have the regular AGA overflow kit, or did you install a Durso drainpipe? The durso setup is much, much quieter and well worth the modification/tinkering required.

pump noise? The GRI pumps are incredibly quiet.

Is the pump vibrating? Could you put a piece of foam or a mouse pad or something under the pump?

I'm not saying the pump is really loud... just too loud for some of the other family members. I have some stuff under the pump to keep the vibration down.

When I crank the pump up all the way, it's quite a dust storm in the tank. I really don't think I could pump that amount of water into the tank without turning the Southdown up constantly (maybe I just got a super powerful GRI pump).

Yes, I'm using the standard AGA plumbing for now (it's not loud at all). I figured I'd be switching to a Durso, but don't think I'll need to do that...

I ordered a Blueline from Champion. They said they are very quiet. Any recommendations?

I plan on using a wavemaker in the future with three or four powerheads (any suggestions here?) so I know I'll get to an optimal noise to turnover rate...
