165 gallon (72x18x30). Comes with standard flourescent lighting, 2 canister filters, and everything pictured. Claims it was custom built and cost over 2k about 3 years ago.

In my experience, this is sort of like real estate - the value is determined by who is willing to pay what.

$2K for everything pictured actually seems somewhat reasonable to me, considering the size and what appears to be good quality, and very pretty base, tank and hood setup.

Whether or not he will settle for less is another story.

If you are the only one interested and you bid 1K, he may take it. But if others are bidding too, and you end up competing, it could get pricey...

Either way though - it's a very pretty setup. One day I shall have something that nice. :) However, mine will be saltwater. I have big dreams... ;)

doesn't matter what it cost 2-3 years ago.

this will depreciate and the market is not very friendly to sellers.
some of the accessories may help but ...I picked up many nice tanks for just a few hundred with stands and all accessories.

That's a beautiful tank with an attractive stand and canopy. The lighting is nothing special, as the tank is very tall, and I assume the seller didn't specify what brand and model of canister filters are included. That would impact to an extent what I would be willing to offer. Then again, I see that you're located in Montana, and my experience is that used tanks are much more expensive if you're outside of a major metropolitan area. I'm not sure why, maybe it's the lack of competition. I agree with star rider that the person shouldn't expect to make a significant portion of the money back that was invested into the setup, but at the same time I see insane Craigslist deals in California that I would never see around here.

What is the seller's asking price?

$800 max

I agree that it doesn't matter what it cost originally, I just posted it to give a baseline.

I was just curious to what that size tank had been bringing. I've bought and sold a crap load of smaller tanks, but nothing over 120.

Yeah, MT sucks on most everything. Not enough competition to bring pricing inline. He's thinking on my offer of 700.00

You could offer $1 per gallon and max at $2 per gallon for the tank and then decide what the rest is worth to you. Equipment - 1/2 of current new cost. Used equipment (other than tanks) is a shot in the dark. I agree that $800 is fair and would max at $1200 tops.

Thanks guys. We ended up agreeing on 700.00. I feel this is a fair deal. It's funny, I do a ton of woodworking and could build a nice stand and top and save myself a few bucks but would rather not mess around with it. Now I just need to decide on a direction for it. I'd love to setup another saltwater tank but just don't think the miss's would allow it. I just placed an order for a Duc 1198 so I better not push my luck for a little while. :)
