Yup I think Im goin with the wal mart one
I didnt think it came with a heater though even if it does I will probably invest in a good quality one casue it probably isnt very good

So what kind of substrate, I was thinking what ever the people who plant their tanks use so if I do decide to plant it I dont have to put in all new substrate and everything
So what is this called, how much do I need, and how much will it cost

If you have any technical skills, i would try making your own filter with a trip to lowes. I made a wet dry filter for a quarter of the cost of a simple powerhead filter attched to a undergravel filter for a 10 galon. It only took me about two hours of research and about an hour of builidng. It would be great to give you something to do while you arent working for the next couple weeks. (get good at making them, and making them look "preaty" and you can even sell them for a mark up... on ebay CUSTOM FILTERS FOR AQUARIUM!)

Do you have any links for the ones you have done that have turned out really well?

The way I was thought that how much substrate you need is you multiply the tank size..The size of the 55 gallon tank is 48 by 13..You multiply that and it is 624 and you take out the last number which leaves 62..You need 62 pounds of substrate for a 55 gallon..

I'm using pool filter sand in my 55. It cost $9 for a fifty lb bag. I actually thought 50 lbs was a little too much; I ended up taking a little out so I have an inch and a half to two inches of substrate. You can have some plants with sand or regular gravel, you just have to accept that your choices are going to be limited. If you want to get serious about plants, your substrate, not to mention your lights are going to be much more expensive.

Edited to add, I have Home Depot play sand in one of my 20's, which costs about half as much as the pool filter sand.
