I posted a similar question under Cichlid section, but I'd like to generalize it a little here.

If you have this tank (a 45g), what would you do with this tank?

Well, I created the first tank (25g) with easy maintenance in mind and it was just that - super easy tank that requires almost no maintenance. Lots of easy fishes, lots of java moss and java fern under only 20w lights and everything in it thrives.

Then I purchased smaller tanks for breeding purposes which are going great.

Started working on a 33g with Lake Tang species - waiting for someone at the local auction to offer nice species.

This is my next project, and I am looking for something that is visually stunning (whatever that means... :D). The species in 25g are rather small and somewhat boring to look at after a while. I did look into planted SA tank as well, which still looks quite interesting as a possibility.

If this matters, my tap water is pH=7.2, KH=2, GH=5.

I like the depth of that tank and if you are up for a challenge, i would try my hand at a high light, co2 injected plant tank... complete with a small variety of rainbow fish, and some cory cats. The depth of the tank would definately be nice when it comes to aquascaping, and since it isn't large neither, maintanence shouldn't be too hard.

I've never gotten into any large SA Cichlids before. Just about the largest fish I have is the German Blue Ram... :D (Oh, I guess bristlenoses are longer).

What would be the settings for these guys?

In fact, I do have two fixtures, each can handle two 30w of lights, so in total, I could have 120w max. Would this qualify as "high light"? Also, would DIY CO2 work in 45g tank? I read from somewhere that it usually isn't recomended for tanks larger than 33g... (I like the two-bottle design which can prevent overflow of the materials from the main bottle).

I have some panda cories which are getting close to maturity. I'd like to try breeding them so in theory I could have many of these in the planted tank... I'll look up on the rainbow fish...

Any suggestions on the plants given my lights?

Thanks for the suggestions.

post in the plants forum. you'll get some good responses. i would definitely do an awesome heavily planted w/ rock caves and driftwood with that tank. the 18" width gives you some nice depth for designing. you could have a lot of plants with 3w/g or so. plantwise, you'd have a ton of options with that much light.

Great! I'll try out the planted section...

I dont know if this is up your alley, but those would be nice dimensions for a red-belly piranha setup. Granted it would only fit one, but that depth is unique and that would be a fun deal. But the planted idea does sound very nice, I have to admit.
