What's a good filter for a 20 gallon?

I'm planning on getting a new filter for my 20 high tank. Right now i have an aqua clear which i don't really like. The only other filters I've used are whisper and marineland. Would like to know what my options are.

Don't know why you don't like AquaClear, but an AC 50 is an ideal filter for a 20 gal. tank.

I run an AC30 on the 29g in my sig, but also have a pair of sponge bubbler filters in the tank.

Having owned several other brand/style HOBs, I don't recommend or use anything other than Aquaclear.

I would say an AC 30 is good. I personally think they are hard to beat, I've had decent luck with Marineland Penguin filters, id says a Penguin 200 would work for your size tank as well

I didn't like our first AC either but now love them. The lack of self-priming & the leveling piece were a PITA. And they do need to be pretty level! I still have & use old Whispers but wouldn't buy them again. I have a Whisper 30 & AC 50 on my 20 long.

There are smaller canisters like Eheim you might try. But canisters are more of a PITA to clean IMO. I only use larger ones on big tanks, never tried small.

Saying why you want to replace it might help with getting meaningful suggestions. Noise? Water movement? Maintenance?

I would stick with the Aquaclear. However I would upgrade to a AC110 providing that it fits. I personally think they are the best power filters.

I've heard of it done, but an AC70 or 110 on a 20g tank is a LOT of water movement. Not sure if it was here, but one dude claimed to have had an AC110 on a 10g. Talk about glass face plant..
