whats a good filter?

the fluval FX5 is supposed to be awesome, but what makes me nervous is the whole "filter shuts it self off each day to let the gases disipate" feature...

if this feature malfunctions, your filter shuts off and doesn't come back on...

to me, that is putting a little to much trust into modern technology..especially from a Fluval product...
 
Forget the fluvals. If you can afford it go for an Eheim. You will never be sorry. If that is not in the budget then get a good HOB filter such as the Aquaclear 110 or a pair of smaller aquaclears one for each side.

wow, thanks for all the posts everyone. I posted in the brackish section too since this will be a brackish tank, but the few reply's I got there were all for the aquaclear 100/500 filters and ehiem2213.

After taking my budget and everyone's input, I think I'm going to go with either the Aquaclear 110 or the Mag350 pro system. I have a penguin 350 that I may stick on there as well...

I guess now I'm wondering which is better, The Aquaclear110 or the Mag350 pro system?

The Mag350 pro Looks like it would be better, with the additional biowheels and it is a canister filter... but I'm not sure, and Also concerned about build quality. I'm not trying to buy a new filter unless I get a new tank.
 
I recently bought a Fluval 404. Was on my way out to get an XP3, but the dude at the family LFS had an open box 404 that he let me have for $60. This is my first cannister filter.

Just cleaned for the first time last night. What's the big deal about the priming? I popped off the tubes and cleaned it. When I reattached the tubes, there was still water in the tubes and it started filling on it's own. I hit the primer about a dozen times, plugged it in, and it ran great.

It seems very quiet and my tank is 99% clear. So far so good.
