What's a good fish?

I am not unbiased, I admit that from the start. I love my feeder goldfish. They have great personalities and are very durable fish. On the downside, they are very dirty. They poop a lot. They have been easy to take care of and if I make mistakes they can handle it. I think they are great for beginners.
Also, I just read something about cories. I heard that they are great.

It really depends on lots of things. Even tetras will even pick at each other when there's only two or three of them. Most fish only show aggression in certain circumstances- tank crowding, being housed with more than 1 of the same species (like anabantids), stress from tankmates, and even the fish's personality come into play.

Some people have bettas that work well in community tank... Mine will terrorize any kind of fish to no end. He puts up with snails, but I won't even risk putting a frog in with him.

Smaller tetras, guppies, minnows, rainbowfish, swordtails and platies, hatchets, most dwarf gouramis (when only one per tank), cories, otocinclus ... those are safe bets for "aggression free" fish... but remember, any fish can become aggressive when given the proper situation- and then there's always the one freak occurance where you have some white cloud minnow or a guppy or something that goes on a rampage and tries to take on fish many times its size...

All the cories are gr8 and lots of fun, but recently, having acquired 2 weather loaches, Dojo Loach, these are the scene stealers. I recommend them to anyone who wants some amusement. I also love it when they twine around each other while swiming upwards. Nothing is more fun than playing with a skinned pea. Best of all, they were only a 1.87 each at walmart. I got a steal, methinks. And they don't hide, not fearing your hand in the tank either. They will come right up to you and see what you're doing. :)

They have cory faces, and always have a mischevious expression, and long eel-like bodies. I heard there are orange ones too.

cories are by far my favorite fish right now... they are super friendly, always active, not afraid of anything, don't get picked on by anything and don't pick on anything...

whenever i rearrange or plant plants, they will swim right over and around my hand.. i love them more than any other fish and they are soooo hardy... i cycled my tank with one of them, and he's still up and kicking like nothing every happened.. they also grow fast.. in about a month he's grown 1/2 an inch up to about 1 1/2 inches.

I think from my meagre fish experience
that the most freindly fishes Ive come
across are corys tetra and discus ...
the discus mainly only show aggression
to each other... on the other end some
of the more aggressive fish ive seen are
the gouramis and bumble bee chiclid of
course the larger the fish the more of a
chance of bitting and fin nipping to the smaller.
its important to try and get fish of the same size
and strength or finding which fish are freindly
with what. for instance i have tetra in with my discus
tank and theres no problem, now if i had tetra in
my oscar tank they would all be goners well hope you
choose well and try to do some research before hand
Aquria Central is a great source of information on what
fish are super freindly

My favorite fish right now are my cories and my killifish. While my mollies are the first to come say "hi" and nibble at me when my arm's in the tank, the cories are adorable and active and they don't chase anyone else. The killis are gorgeous and fun as they like to come see who's looking in the tank and they beg for food relentlessly. Plus they'll chase tiny feeder guppies and have wiped out the mollie fry threatening to take over my tank. (I finally had to remove the male molly!) And they'll come nip at my arm as well, like they're saying, "thanks for cleaning up in here, now how about some grub?" :D

Platies. Get platies. They are really friendly, pretty, active, and hardy. The only bad thing about them is that they are a bit messy.

Good Luck!

If I was setting up a friendly (community) fish aquarium I would probably go with a low tech planted tank with tetra, cories, and ottos. If you don't want to have a planted tank though a school of tetra and a handful and cories generally make a pleasant and easily cared for tank.
