What's a good flake food to feed your neon tetras?

Omega one is the only worth buying at the lfs. Tetra and other brands contain fillers such as wheat that fish don't need and make them poop extra and Hikari puts msg in theirs. Ken's fish food online is the best and most affordable according to members here.

Why no msg?

id check the ingrediants out if fish meal is the one thats first id usually stay away

I thought that just gave it a lot of protein no?

I just checked and although the Hikari does put msg in some of their food, they don't put it in the specific food I a looking at.

Also fish meal is the first ingredient.

I can't do Kens because I need to be able to get it at my LFS.

I make up my own flakes now. I buy tropical flakes Nutrafin, I mix in bloodworms, Brineshrimps, tetramin algae crisps. My 55 gal. community fish tank fish love it. I have 1 lg. angelfish, 6 harleqen rasboras, 6 dwarf rasboras, 2 bushynosed plecos, 4 assassin snails, 3 bubble bee platies, 2 boesmani rainbow fish. You can make up a mix for your tetras. If the flakes are to big crush them a little. I put all this in a big zip lock bag and put some in a plastic food container that the food came in. This is good if you have a community tank with different fish types.

I use the tetra flakes for my neons with no problems. I can't argue that they are nutritionally the best, but they eat them. Yes, they do come as VERY large flakes, but if you shake the can a lot, they break up. Tetra also sells some of their flakes that are already very small. You might look at the various tetra flakes, some marked for fish like bettas are already finely crushed.

A problem with neons is they don't eat what's on the substrate. Once it lands, they usually ignore it. Large flakes tend to end up as snail food.

Why no msg?

Well, I have bad reaction to msg and a lot of people do. There is no reason to put an artificial flavor enhancer in fish food. We have no idea what it does to fish and it's definitely not healthy.

Omega one is a better value considering it has way less fillers.

I checked online and my LFS Only caries these brands:

  • Tetra
  • Hagen
  • Wardley
  • Hikari
  • Ocean Nutrition

And I mentioned this before but I just want to make sure people know that the particular I am looking at although made by Hikari has no msg I checked the ingredients online.

P.S. I did know about how msg affects some people I just did not know if it affected fish in a negative way too.

Then I would go with the Hikari, it is just a matter of reading through the ingredients as you would for your own food and for your other pets.
