A sump is an additional volume of water that is connected to the main tank via plumbing. How the water gets from the main tank and back again varies, but that's the essence. Many people use 'non-tanks' for a sump, like a large rubbermaid container, but many use a regular tank. Just depends on the size and shape you need. Sumps are also useful for keeping equipment, like heaters, out of the main tank but still in the system..
