i have this african mbuna male whos always curling around the female and doing a little fast shakes, and always xchassing other fish out of certain areas, whats he doingthis for?
i call this 'dancing' and he does it to show off.... either to attract a female or establish dominance over other males. You might have some babies soon
well i found one before, was getting bigger and braver, but a little to brave for its size, i think one of the cats at it. they lay eggs? or what do they do?
yeah i saw her mouth all swollen like that not too long ago,i remember she always hide under this one rock, could they be under there? i guess the babies didnt make it...
If there is enough small places for the fry to hide then there is a good chance some will survive. Watch your females closely and make note of the day they start holding, then you can judge when you should remove them to raise the fry seperatly if you want.
yeah right trying to catch africans in a 55 with lots of rocks to hide lol, how big are they when they first hatch and what color, the one i saw before was a yellow color, not a very camiflage color lol how often the spawn and how long she hhold them?
Trust me... i know whats its like. i have a 32 gallon stock piled with rocks, some siliconed together... and i have to remove all the rockwork every time i have to catch a holding female (got 2 holding right now i have to catch very soon). Takes me about 2 hours... i usually try to catch them first without moving the rockwork then i get frustrated and slowly start removing the rocks. on top of that i have valliserneria that is upwards of 4 feet long making a canopy that is virtually impossilbe to catch fish in. i end up ripping up the plants and having to replant them.
but on the plus side moving the rockwork lets you get in there and clean it well, which should be done every now and then anyways.
how long they hold depends on the type of fish. generally 2-4 weeks is standard holding term. i usually remove mine at 2 weeks. my afra just spat 10 babies a couple weeks ago and is already holding again.... i am thinking of letting her spit these in the tank. if she can hold for another two weeks until i strip my fulleborni then i will get the fry i guess.
