I got I think a 20 gal aquarium and I have a garden pond and I would like to know what is the best plant for my aquarium. I am thinking about anachris because it roots and I would end up and put some of it in my garden pond. Could you please advise me?
it depends what you want. Stemmed plants, crypts, swords, what size? What lighting? Anacharis will grow about anywhere. It's a weed. Cabomba is the same way. Let us know more details and tank details and we'll help you out! Here's a pic of my setup.
"best plant" depends on a ton of different factors, including each person's preferences! some people like fast growing plants the best, some slow so they don't have to prune them. then there is how everyone has their own opinion about what is an "attractive" plant. you can rank them by how easy they are to grow, or by how much light they need.
if you are a beginner to plants (like me) and don't want to spend much on lights (like me too) and your goal is to be able to put aquarium plants that you grow into your pond eventually, anacharis sounds like a good choice other people can probably give you some additional suggestions, i don't know of other dual purpose pond/aquarium plants off the top of my head right now.
Anacharis is great if you don't want to mess with the plants. The things just grow and it's the only plant my Pl*co won't eat. If you just let it float and grow, it makes a nice hideout for fry.
Anubis! It grows in just about anything, on a porous rock, wood, just wrap it to something with cotton thread and then let the thread rot away and it will grow. Or push it into the substrate. I like the way the leaves unfurl. Its slow, but will grow in low light or bright. And doesn't mind if you move it from time to time. It is a nice dark green.
I have something the LFS guy said was a banana plant. it has banana like things on the bottom to naturally weigh it down, it has lilly pad like leaves that grow to the top of the surface. a web site I read said you need to root it in the substrate but mine seem fine to just lay there as the LFS said.
