What's the Best Cookware? (no Teflon)

no, I'm not too computer savy so i an't get a pic. its kinda like the old handheld carrot peelers but with holes instead of a slot. the holes only go one way :(

Get Saladmaster Stainlass Steel pots. My parents have owned them for about 20 years and we're still using them! We own some of those woks and stuff that you can find at Asian stores or the Chinatown(if there is one in your city) nearest to you for just as long as the Saladmasters. Seriously, those woks and other Asian pots do work great for almost everything...soup or frying, you name it. What else can can I say about those? I'm asian. ;) LoL

I like the All-Clad pieces I have and am surprised I haven't seen anyboby else suggest it. You can often get great deals on it if you purchase it as a set. I also use cast iron. I have four skillets of various sizes. A good rolled steel wok is always a great versatile tool. Find a lid for it and it could be the only thing you use.

If you are thinking of Christmas gifts for an epicurean loved one, may I also suggest a couple of other tools that would be welcome. A good chef's knife is something that will be useful and long lasting. If they like to bake, some of the new silicone bakeware coming out would be good to have and it also is reasonably priced. Personally, its what I am hoping for this year.

I bet it would be pretty tough to flip an egg with one of those contraptions. :D

fun to watch though..

why no teflon?
that stuff is the bomb! nothing ever sticks and cleanup is insanely fast!
every time I use anything else stuff gets burned in different areas and there is always a lot of soaking or scraping to clean! grr!

With teflon, I'm always afraid to use metal utensils, and the plastic ones feel flimsy. I know teflon is better than it used to be, but still...

The plastic/nylon utensils have really improved. I don't consider Teflon/Silverstone pans to be in the same class as really good cookware; they are certainly not as long-lived, but for some things, nothing beats a non-stick surface. I can handle replacing a $15 omelet pan every two years if it really is non-stick.

I love my nylon tools. They are very sturdy, and I can use them for just about anythng--even stirring candies, at high heats. I tossed all the metal tools long ago--they aren't as easy to clean, and they aren't as durable. I also have silicone tools (scrapers and such) that are heat resistant and fantastic for making scrambled eggs and omelets.

I love teflon. Just don't let it overheat and you won't die.

Chico hit the Teflon right on the money. I have a couple of Teflon pans but rarely use them. Most anyone who has birds in the house knows that Teflon is a big no no as the fumes from an overheated pan can kill birds. This alone tells me that Teflon is not the greatest thing in the world to be using.

Lark,
I am with you on the cast iron stuff and the Wok. I wouldnt be without a wok. Cast iron is just one of those things that most people dont take the time to season and "work in" to make them work wonders. Theres nothing like having a cast iron dutch oven to bake those biscuits in the morning after you light that campfire :D
