whats the best goldfish food?

Actually, best is a quantifiable quality, based on hard facts and statistics. You can break down "best" and see which food gives you the most nutritionally complete profile or the highest quality ingredients, or you can factor in price, which leads you to the greatest value. None of those qualities factor in cheapness though, and generally, that is never a criterion when discussing the best of a certain item. Cheapest things are usually far from the best, and with fish food especially, you're getting what you paid for. So, that said, I'm gonna have to politely disagree with everything you've contributed to the discussion so far.

which is better for my fish, good food or a filter? I don't have much $$$ to spare for better food, so the best i can do is get them somewhat cheaper foods that satisfy the fish.

personally if i couldnt afford a decent food, i wouldnt keep the pet. i wouldnt feed my dog the cheapest can of manky wet meat going as no doubt the nutrition would be poor, and i wouldnt feed my goldfish a rubbish food just because its what i can afford. if you cant afford the pet, rehome it to someone who can give it what it needs :rant2: sorry, just gets right on my nerves when people insist on keeping animals they cannot give good care to. to say its a choice of good food or a filter, is rubbish, a filter is a must for good fish keeping, as is quality diet IMO.

One might consider not keeping fish until one can afford to do so properly-- that is another mature and reasonable option. One's personal situation really doesn't enter into the OP's question.

The OP did not indicate financial hardship and merely asked for the best goldfish food. I would defer to Inka on this one, as he has had more specialized experience than I have in the field of high-quality goldfish, despite the fact that I have been raising them for over 20 years. His opinion, based on his experience would outrank the weight of mine. Either way, of the international brands, Hikari, although expensive, seems to be preferred among those who choose not to formulate their own foods. Hopefully the OP will take that for what it is worth.

What's best for your pet has nothing to do with what you're capable of providing them. Kelly and Somer have it absolutely correct. You have no business keeping animals if you have to choose between providing adequate filtration and an adequate diet. Judging by the photos of your goldfish tank in your album, adequate housing isn't even a blip on your radar. That said however, I feel that I've contributed as much as I can to this thread, and any further visits by me will only continue the derail. Sorry to the op for this digression.

sorry to all that i did not reply in a timely manner i am a technician and i had to go out in the field and yesterday was a long one so i did not get back . my apoligies.

do you find your bubble eyes hard to care for?.

I adore my bubble eyes! Don't tell the others, but they are my favorites. They aren't really any more difficult than other facnies, but they are divas. They have a separate tank with completely rounded objects, a covered filter and very soft real plants. They are clumsy and adorable.

Maurice, my oldest (she's about 4 3/4", which isn't bad for a bubble eye) had a horrible accident with a filter hose about four months ago, completely ripping the bubble. I am pleased to report that she is back to 100% health, and the bubble has grown back to larger than before. Yes, they are a lot of trouble, but they are absolutely worth it!
