I'd like to raise the ph in my tanks. I'd like to keep my snails healthy and happy but it appears that my ph is too low for them. Their shells are starting to erode. I've heard using seashells to raise ph. I have seashells but not exactly sure how many to put in or if they need to be crushed up first. I've also heard that crushed coral could be used but I have no crushed coral at home. What is a good ph level for snails? My ph is usually 7.0

Keep the pH to at least 7.4. Seashells can work whether crushed or not. If your pH is not increasing by a large difference, you need to add more seashells. Limestones, marble chips, crushed oyster shells, eggshells, cuttlefish bones and aragonite also help increase the pH. You could use liquid calcium if your KH is very low. What are your hardness levels?

i'm not sure what the hardness of the water is. My test kit doesn't test for hardness. I have the master freshwater test kit from api. How should I clean the seashells before using them? I also have cuttlebone. If the snails eat the cuttlebone would that also give them calcium? would they eat cuttlebone? Thanks for the help Lupin. :)

Cuttlebone is also good to place in your tanks as long as it is not flavored/cured with anything--it must be the plain cuttlebone.

the cuttlebone I have is for pet birds. I know the cuttlebone I have isn't flavored but i'm not sure if it's cured or not. How can you tell if it's been cured or not?

How should I clean the sea shells before putting them in the tank?
Should I just rinse them in water before putting them in or should they be boiled? The sea shells I have I got on vacation last year.

Just give them a washing to remove any salt residues and they will be fine for use.

Thanks Lupin I'm going to test the ph of my water and then add thet sea shells.

lupin the cuttle bone they are talking about is not a cuttlefish bone....its used to grind down the beak of small parrots
