Whats the best way to treat ick?

So how long do I treat with raised heat and salt?
Did you read the article I linked to earlier? You can be aggressive and sure, and do around 3 weeks. most folks say 1-2 weeks after the last white spot falls off.

1 week after the last spot is probably good enough, especially if you use a gravel vacuum and water changes during the treatment. 2-3 weeks "after" the last spot of ich is probably better and will assure that ich doesn't return unless you bring in a new fish with ich (and for that reason a nice small quarentine tank will work wonders at keeping ich out of the main tank). And yes, please read the article, it is very good and has all the info you will need on salt and heat and med treatments.

I am reading where some people are saying it is a good idea to add 1 tablespoon of salt per 5 gallons of water and leave it in all the time, because it is good for the fishes gills and it is a good Ick preventative. Any one do this?

Table salt is fine.

So then stores just lie to me when they tell me I need aquarium salt?

Yes. They want you to buy their salt. There is a grand myth that the iodine in salt (which by the way isn't iodine but iodide) will poison your fish. Well it surely could if you added enough salt to pickle the fish. In the dose suggested to treat ich it will do no harm. All living things need some iodide in their diet, and that is why it is in salt to help humans get their fair share.

Aquarium salt is also probably fine if you are more comfortable with it, but I bet the ingredients aren't listed on the box as it is with table salt.

I do have a question, after reading the link posted above, it's says to treat ick raise your temp to 86 degrees. Then below it says the sure fire method is to add 1 to 2 teaspoons of salt per gallon. It does not say to do both. Should I be raising my temp and adding salt or is adding salt enough? I don't see the point in stressing the fish any more than needed.

salt will kill the ick if the dosage is strong enough. the heat speeds up the ick's lifecycle i usually do the temperature but with the added heat the salt will help because the fish will be able to breathe faster and most sources of water has some salinity to it and they can tolerate it fine. did you start treatment yet? what kind of fish do you have?

also the first post is in general some fish cant tolerate the heat and some cant tolerate the salt thats probably why it lists so many options but as said before and having lots of agreement i think you should do both.
