What's the deal with flow ratings?

I had almost all my fish playing in the current at the same time, even my shrimp was in the mix lol

For the 29gal, I would use the Koralia 1, it might sound like a lot of current but they're amazingly gentle.
 
Yeah, the Emperor 400 is what I have on my 29G and it's the perfect amount of flow...it rated for up to a 90G, but I wouldn't put it on my 90G!

I run 2 of them on my 90.


When looking at the flow rate they are given with no media and some are given with brand new media. There is no industry standard. What I do is figure how many turnovers per hour I would get. My standard is 6-8 turnovers per hour and then try to find filters large enough to accommodate it, even if it means running 2 filters. The exceptions are canisters and sumps. For them a minimum of 3 per hour is what I try to achieve because they hold far more media than typical HOB's do. I also take in to consideration if the fish are messy or not and how heavy/light stocking I have..
