What's the difference between cured and uncured rock?

When you ship rock, a lot of stuff dies along the way. "Curing" it means putting it somewhere to allow the dead stuff to rot, so it doesn't pollute your tank when you add it. Many will argue that it's pointless to have cured rock shipped, because more stuff will die and you'll have to re-cure it anyway.

To cure it I think they mist it lighty with saltwater to keep the hardy good stuff alive, but kill off like mantis shrimp and sponges that cannot be exposed to air before they go into your tank and pollute it or introduce bad hitchhikers like mantis shrimps and such.

I pretty much said what Dave said, but whatever:D

The reason he can not get it is because he lives in Hawaii. We are very limited to what we can do or bring into the state as some of the species can decimate others in our waters. I am at present working on another importation list that will be submitted to the state that makes a little more sense than the current one. Live rock will however not be on the list of things that you can bring in.

Live Rock in Hawaii

Hi Reefscape,
I don't know. I was in Coral Fish Hawaii (close to Buzz's Steakhouse) and they had just sold the last of their Molokai Live Rock. I asked them if that was legal to sell here and they told me that it was legal to sell but only Hawaiian live rock.
Aloha dude.

P.S. I just saw that your from Kauai, so I'm not sure if you'll know where Buzz's is at here on Oahu.

Oh ya, I know Randy, the owner of Coral fish. You should also check out modern pet down in Waikiki. His prices are a bit higher but I know where he gets his fish from and they are nice stuff.

As far as the rock goes, yes you can sell river rock in Hawaii but there is really nothing on it. You can also play the grey area of picking up rock that has been washed up on the beach due to high surf. If you catch it right after the surf, you find lots of stuff on it still. This is known as coral rubble which you can collect up to a gallon bucket per day. That is the catch 22. You can only collect this for personal use and not to re sell.
