Hey everyone,

Ever since I started researching and looking at fish/equipment for my first tank (soon to be complated within the next 2 months), I have gone to 4 different LFS and PetSmart included. All of the stores had Betta fish in tiny cups or in small "cages" within bigger tanks.

WTF????

Why are they doing this to these beautiful fish? If its because of their fighting temperament, well they can put all of them in a big tank with dividers (i.e. a 20 gallon filtered tank divided into twenty 1 gallon tanks using dividers)!

I wonder how many customers assume Bettas can live in tiny places with NO filteration.

Utter stupidity! :shakehead:

Oh and Walmart is the champion when it comes to fish abuse. Especially Bettas. Its like seeing a bunch of dead Bettas that happen to have one or two alive.

If you love fish, don't go near the fish section at Walmart...

Its because Betta's evolved in very muddy silty areas with poor water quality, so they evolved the labyrinth breathing (think lungs in a fish). So they come to the top and take oxygen from surface air.

As such, they don't need near any space to live technically. That fact is just exploited to sell them as desk ornaments. They can be housed with other fish, but their tankmates must be chosen VERY carefully. Good parents though, very protective of their eggs.

Interestingly enough, my Leapard Ctenopoma also has that same breathing apparatus, as do dwarf gourami's (and I would assume therefore regular gourami's, but not sure).

lol i did an online search... should have done that before posting this... looks like Im not the only one mad about it LOL

Calling out Walmart as being the worst isn't very smart. Maybe the Walmart you shop at may not be vigilant in it's inventory, but that doesn't mean all are that way. There are many other corporate owned stores that are just as bad if not worse.

Bettas are a revenue generator for a store that demands little attention. I agree there are better ways to display them, but until ornamental fish are given the same protections as other animals it isn't going to improve.

All Ctenopomas, Gouramis, and Bettas have the same breathing.

yesterday at wally world they had betta containers on top of another betta containers and the bottom containers that had the bettas were suffercateing so i just removed all the top containers and added them to other shelfs ( still the same betta shelf but diff shelf tho ) and i made sure theres NO containers on anther container... how cruel but i shouldnt say that cause petco of all places is 10x worse then wallmart * in my area atleast * and thats just sad..
