What's your favorite fish?

Thanks everyone!
I'm sort-of a newbie - My dad always kept a 20 gallon when I was a kid it had a parade of goldfish and then mollies, gouramis and swords. I've had 5 and 10 gallons the last two years and currently keep 5 cardinal tetras and a cory in the 10 gal.

But I've made LOTS of a mistakes w/ fish tanks (one of my worst childhood memories involves accidently killing all the fish in our 20 tank when I was like 8 years old) :(

I found this forum while trying to figure out how to correctly cycle my new Oceanic 42 gallon hex! :D I'm very excited. Had to convince my hubby.... :bowing: He' s trying to help me keep on track (writing my disseration). But I'd much rather procrastinate by picking out fish or cleaning.

Anyways - So I've finally got a 42 hex w/ 3 danios and 3 guppies in it cycling (seeding from the other 10 gallon).

I've read through a couple fish/species web pages, drs. foster smith, & an older tropical fish book - but seen a lot of new names/species mentioned in the forums. So I was wondering what people really loved in their tanks and couldn't live without!

I know that I really like (and have kept):
Cardinal tetras
fancy guppies
dwarf Gouramis (but didn't live >1 year?)
Blue Ram (BEAUTIFUL - but he got aggressive and I gave him away, I think b/c he was lonely!)

I like the looks sound/of:
discus (won't work in my tank though- too small)
angels (?)
emporer tetras (the blue/purple ones )
rosey barbs
colorful mollies/platys
Red swords
harlequin rasboas
austrialian, celbes and Boseman's rainbow fish
killifish
colorful cichlids (won't work in a community tank though, especially a hex- right?)
loaches (the leapord or tiger looking ones - but won't work w/ blue rams- right?)

Don't know what the make up of my community tank should be yet...."still fishing". :) I realize a lot of what I like won't fit in it - So I already wish I had a bigger tank! Or at least 2!
My husband's eventually going to kill me! How do you stop? it's a bit of an addiction, isn't it?
 So THANKS for the favorites suggestions!

mine use to be parrots before they turned cocky and started nipping me everytime my hand was in the water, they gained to of the chain of command when i removed my oscar, does anyone know the cichlid required to breed these parrots?

My favorite species at the moment is definitely Charicidium fasciatum. I only have one of these fish (the only one I've ever seen), but hope to get more. Tied for second are my zebra otos and my halfbeaks.

As for small cichlids, I think the rams would do fine in a community tank if you pick the other inhabitants carefully. There are other dwarf cichlids that could work as well. Not as colorful as rams, but Laetacara Curviceps is a small peaceful cichlid. In fact I picked up a pair of these tonight and they are nice little fish. I'm about to introduce them to my 40 gal.
