What's Your Opinion on Jaubert's Plenum Method?

Still undecided on how to set the tanks up and the stand isn't completed yet, either. He's now pretty sure about doing a faux sandbed in the main display tank that will contain live rock and corals. The other tank will be a refugium for plants and may still end up with a plenum or DSB.

I don't like it simply because your limited to a larger grain of sand or gravel. Not many burrowing animals are going to like that. I like shallow sand beds that can be vacuumed now and then along with good skimming and water changes. I might consider this if I had a large refugium connected to my display.

Hi
There are dozens of ways to go about it . One of the great arguments is depth of sand and particlle size as well as
the size of the "hole" If the tank were mine I''d go bare bottom in the display tank with the plenum in the sump.
Good skimmer for sure. They make nitrate filters using much different concepts but the concept is similar.
My original was a one inch "plenum" with the undergravel set above that separated by fine sand . UG was driven by fine air . Never heard of live sand or rock in those days lol Tank was a 40 gallon breeder . The concept was a dual chambered UG At the end I added another 40, air driven skimmer and a DIY algae scrubber which was VERY badly designed when it came to maintenence. i would do that MUCH differently today though it's obvious a "plenum " works
they're not perfect lol gary
