...how do you make sure that the rate the water is being returned to the tank is the same as that it is siphoned out of the overflow box?

The gph ratings of overflow boxes are the maximums so if you have a 600 gph overflow with a 500 gph pump the overflow will run at 500 gph. An overflow can run a any gph from zero to the gph it is rated, but it is best to keep it as close as possible.

put ball valves on the drain going into the sump and the return pump bringin the water back up. let the water come down and go back up through the pump with the valves open, if you see the water level in the sump rising.... turn down the ball valve for the water comming into it. you might have to play with it. What overflow do you have/return pump, gph???

As long as the overflow is rated to handle at least as much as the return pump then it will only flow as much water as is returned by the return pump, there is no need for valves or trying to regulate it.

The only place you should put the ball valve is on the return line if you want to slow or increase the flow since the overflow will flow at the rate of the return pump. Do not put a ball valve on the overflow line.

alright, i didn't realize the overflow rate was kind of self regulated depending on the return pump. thanks all.
