When to add snails?

OP has a betta. It is one of those fish that will not work with apple snails as they tend to nip the eyestalks and antennaes out but this is basically trial and error. Try and see if the betta attempts to harass it. None of mine worked previously with any of my snails and had to be removed. For a 10g, I'd stick to at least 3-4 unless you want to increase your maintenance regimen and filtration capacity if you want to add more in your tank.

yes, it is a gamble, as Lupin said. i had all three of my male bettas with at least one snail in their tanks (10 gallons) and had no issue with nipping. i'm pretty sure i just lucked out on some uber mellow betta boys.

perhaps try it, but ask the lfs if you can return it if the betta harasses it. around my neck of the woods, most smaller lfs have no problem with that.

unless you want to become a ninja with the gravel vac, lol, don't get more than two.

Well, I picked one up tonight - a cute little (for now) black one. I also picked up 3 ghost shrimp.

The betta is ignoring the snail, and chased one of the smallest ghost shrimp when it swam in front of him, but gave up pretty quickly and has been ignoring them since. The other two ghost shrimp are 1/3 the size of the betta, so I'm not too worried, but I'll keep an eye on everyone. :)

Okay!

I can't really get very clear shots (I'll be getting a new, better camera soon hopefully) but you can see Chuck the betta, and the as-yet unnamed snail. He's opened his opperculum a little bit, and seems to be getting used to the environment. He's shy. :)

You can see the ghost shrimp a bit too - I love their little hand claws! They're so cute!

Thanks! I think they're pretty cute too. I'll try to get some better pictures tomorrow when it's light out.

that is a very nice lil tank you have there! i love the wood/rock? structure (hard to tell what it is, lol). is it real or fake?
